This traditional Irish reel is popular in sessions and has found its way into contra dance and American old-time music repertoires. Collected in Chicago by Francis O’Neill and James O’Neill, the tune was published in their O’Neill’s Music of Ireland in 1903. In his video lesson for this tune, Kevin Burke explains that Julia Delaney “was the sister-in-law of Francis O’Neill, Chicago’s police chief back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.”

Played in the key of D Dorian, this tune gives tin whistle players a good reason to get out their C whistles. For a brief and friendly explanation of the Dorian mode, see: Dorian, Mixolydian, Oh My: Modes in a Nutshell.

Dots (Music Notation)
